Plain answers.
The detail should be easy to find.
Can the zappi charge from surplus solar only?
Yes. That is the feature it exists for. The zappi has an excess-solar mode that draws only the power your home is about to export, so the car soaks up the surplus instead of it going to the grid at 2 c/kWh off-peak. On a 6.6kW array with nobody home during the day, that is the difference between a near-free charge and a small bill. It needs a harvi sensor or a compatible metering setup to see the export, which we configure at install.
What is PEN fault protection, and why does it matter here?
Built-in protection against a broken neutral on the street side. A PEN fault is a rare but genuinely dangerous failure in the supply network that can put mains voltage on the metal parts of anything earthed, including a car. Most EV chargers handle it with a separate earth electrode driven into the ground, which is extra work and extra cost on a paved Perth driveway. The zappi detects the fault electronically and disconnects, which usually removes the need for that earth rod.
What warranty and support come with it?
3 years, which is the longest of the AC chargers we stock. Both the Sungrow and the zappi run 36 months, against 24 on the Goodwe HCA and the Tesla Wall Connector. Monitoring is through the myenergi app on iOS and Android. Note that the zappi is listed as a collection or delivery item rather than an installed one, so if you want us to fit it, add installation to the quote and we will price the electrical work against your switchboard.
Which version should I get, 7kW or 22kW?
7kW unless your home already has three-phase power. The 22kW unit needs a three-phase supply, and upgrading a single-phase home to three-phase for car charging is rarely worth it. A 7kW charger adds roughly 40km of range an hour, which covers a normal day's driving in about two hours overnight. Buy the bigger unit because you already have the supply, not in the hope of using it.
