PSW Explains

Huawei SUN2000-L1 and M1 inverter overview

Owners of older Huawei inverters can use the monitoring and fault-code links to seek support. Check the installation date and warranty documents before relying on release-era coverage information.

The SUN2000-L1 and M1 were Huawei’s second-generation residential inverters, released in Australia in 2020 and 2021. We no longer sell Huawei, and this page is kept because a lot of these units are still working on Perth roofs and their owners need the numbers somewhere.

SUN2000-L1 and M1 at a glance

  • SUN2000-L1: single-phase, 3 to 5 kW, dual MPPT, 97.8 per cent efficiency, 375 × 375 × 117 mm, 25 dB(A), 10-year warranty.
  • SUN2000-M1: three-phase, 5 to 10 kW, dual MPPT, 97.8 per cent efficiency, 525 × 470 × 262 mm, 30 dB(A), 10-year warranty.
  • The L1 landed mid-2020; the three-phase M1 slipped to January 2021.
  • Both are now old enough that the ten-year warranty has expired or is close to it. Plan on that basis.

Existing inverter condition

If yours is running, leave it alone. An inverter that has worked for five or six years in a Perth summer has proven itself, and replacing a functioning unit to gain a point of efficiency is not a payback anyone should sell you.

What is worth knowing is the age. These went in from 2020, so the ten-year cover has run out or is running out. An inverter is the part of a solar system that fails first — it does the hardest work, it has the most electronics, and it lives on an outside wall. Ten to fifteen years is the ordinary lifespan, so a 2020 unit is somewhere in the second half of its life.

Replacement options and battery plans

Not whether to replace the inverter, but what to replace it with. If a battery is anywhere in your plans, that replacement is the moment to think about it: a hybrid inverter now costs a little more and saves a lot later, whereas a like-for-like string replacement means paying for the same work twice.

If a battery is not in your plans, a straight replacement is the cheaper and perfectly sensible answer, and we would say so. Not every house needs storage, and a hybrid inverter bought for a battery that never arrives is money spent on optionality nobody used.

Monitoring and fault support

Both models report through Huawei’s monitoring platform and both connect over WiFi, which is the thing most likely to need attention: a router change or a password update will silently stop the reporting while the inverter keeps generating perfectly well.

If it is showing a code, the reference is Huawei inverter error codes. If it has stopped reporting, try the reconnection guide first. Warranty position and why some of these units have none is on the warranty page. If none of that gets there, PSW Life Support covers systems we did not install.

Record: SUN2000-L1 released Australia June 2020; three-phase M1 delayed to January 2021. Specifications as published at release.
