Study 01 / WA grid / Q2 2026

WA’s electricity day
is changing.

Batteries are reshaping the daily rhythm of our grid. But a flatter price curve doesn’t tell the whole story.

A flatter curve.
A different WA story.

The range of the average daily wholesale-price profile narrowed by 66.8% between Q2 2025 and Q2 2026. Yet the quarter’s average price rose 30.3%, from $90.46 to $117.87/MWh.

The strongest shift was a higher midday floor. Battery operation expanded, while the wider generation mix also changed.

A shallower valley.
A higher floor.

The deep midday trough largely disappeared. The highest point of the average profile changed much less.

Where did
the curve move?

Prices increased in every half-hour except 17:00 and 17:30. The change is mostly a rise in the lower-price periods, rather than a large reduction in the evening peak.

The battery fleet
is becoming visible.

Below zero, batteries are absorbing power. Above zero, they are returning it. The growing shape shows how much more actively storage is participating in the electricity day.

53.9 MW2024 peak of the average net discharge profile
217.1 MW2025 peak of the average net discharge profile
486.3 MW2026 peak of the average net discharge profile

These are peaks of quarterly average profiles, not maximum observed dispatch or installed battery capacity.

More charging.
More evening supply.

Separating the two directions reveals the operational change. Additional charging appears below zero; additional discharge appears above it. These are gross changes, unlike the net profile above.

Source quality note: 14 cells in AEMO’s battery-change worksheet contain #NUM! errors. They appear as gaps and “Unavailable” here; the CSV retains the original error markers. They are not treated as zero or estimated.

Batteries aren’t
the whole explanation.

AEMO identifies increased battery charging and reduced coal and wind availability as contributors to higher prices. Gas output rose too. These changes occurred together; this comparison does not isolate a battery-only price effect.

The supply mix shifted as well.

Battery output is discharge, not a primary energy source. Charging is not deducted here, and rooftop solar is outside this breakdown. This is not a complete demand balance.

What does this mean
for your home?

The grid is changing when it uses and stores energy. Your own decisions still begin with when your home uses electricity, how much solar it can produce and what your tariff pays or charges.

Wholesale prices are evidence about the market. They are not your electricity tariff, a battery payback calculation or a promise of savings.

Geography: the Wholesale Electricity Market serving the South West Interconnected System, including Perth. This does not cover all of Western Australia.

How we calculated the comparisons

We compare April–June with the same quarter in prior years. The price series contains 48 half-hour averages. Battery profiles contain 288 five-minute averages. All times are AWST. Lines join supplied observations without smoothing.

The price range is the maximum minus minimum of each average daily profile: $91.17/MWh in 2025 and $30.31/MWh in 2026. The reduction is 1 − (30.306043956 ÷ 91.168351648) = 66.8%. The quarterly price comparison uses the mean of the 48 half-hour averages; all intervals have equal duration.

Price changes are the 2026 average minus the 2025 average at each time. Battery peak figures are the highest supplied point in each year’s average net profile.

What the data cannot tell us

An average daily profile is not a single observed day. Its range is not day-to-day volatility or an achievable trading margin. This study uses averages, not the median demand-weighted eastern-states series often shared online.

To isolate the causal price effect of batteries, further analysis would need interval-level prices, demand, outages, wind, solar and battery dispatch, with controls for changing conditions. No household savings or payback estimate is inferred here.
