If you've read about Tesla selling electricity in Australia, you might be wondering whether you can sign up with the Powerwall you already own. For a home in Perth, the answer is no. Tesla Electric Dynamic isn't available in WA.
You haven't missed a setting in the Tesla app. Your Powerwall can still store solar for later and provide backup where your system is set up for it. Joining Tesla's electricity plan is a separate matter.
Tesla's trial is invitation-only.
In its 28 September review, SolarQuotes examined the terms of Tesla Electric Dynamic. It describes a closed trial for invited Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 owners with a smart meter.
The plan charges fixed rates for electricity you buy, depending on the time of day. For electricity you export, it offers 90% of the real-time wholesale price, using five-minute settlement prices. Joining also means putting your battery in Tesla's virtual power plant (VPP), rather than another provider's.
SolarQuotes raises two questions that would matter before signing: could you be charged for exporting when wholesale prices turn negative, and how is the separate grid-services credit calculated? Those details need clear answers. The plan isn't open for general enrolment, and its reported terms shouldn't be treated as a WA offer.
Where Tesla Electric fits.
Tesla Electric combines your electricity bill and Powerwall management in one plan. Your home still connects to the local electricity grid.
Your usual supply.
- Who sends the bill?
- Synergy, for a typical household.
- Who manages the battery?
- Your chosen app settings, unless you've joined a VPP.
- How are exports paid?
- Your existing scheme. DEBS uses time-of-day rates.

For WA readers: owning a Powerwall doesn't give you access to Tesla Electric.

Perth households still buy from Synergy.
Tesla Energy Ventures Australia received its Australian Energy Regulator authorisation on 3 May 2024 and a separate Victorian retail licence on 17 April 2024. Those approvals don't give it permission to sell electricity in WA, which has its own market and retail rules.
For Perth and the south-west, the rule that matters is retail choice. On the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), customers using 50 MWh or less each year are supplied by Synergy. In the industry's language, they're “non-contestable”. Owning a Powerwall doesn't change that.
Outside the SWIS, the rules differ. Customers can choose a retailer, although Horizon Power is the only retailer operating in many regional areas. That still doesn't amount to a Tesla Electric offer for WA.
Your Powerwall can keep doing its job.
For now, look at the electricity plan and export arrangement you actually have. If you're on Synergy's Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), export payments follow its published time-of-day rates. They don't track the wholesale market every five minutes. Check your bill rather than assuming every solar household is on the same scheme.
Your battery can keep storing spare solar for use after sunset. Backup depends on how it was installed, how much charge is available and what you're trying to run. None of that requires a Tesla Electric retail account.
WA also has its own work under way on battery aggregation. We've covered Synergy's Aggregator Panel and what it could mean for your battery separately. A VPP offer and a change of electricity retailer are different things; it's worth checking exactly what any invitation asks you to join.
Buying a Powerwall? Start with your bill.
We install Powerwalls, but we wouldn't recommend buying one on the promise of a Tesla electricity plan you can't currently join.
Start with how much power you use after sunset, how much spare solar you have and the installed price after any rebates you're eligible for. Include backup if that matters to you. Ask for the savings estimate to use your current tariff and export rates, with any assumed future VPP income shown separately.
If the numbers don't make sense for your home, it's fine to wait. If you'd like help working through them, send us a recent electricity bill and your solar details. We can talk through whether a battery fits, and what the estimate depends on.
